Things coming up on the geek calendar

by Skaidris Gunsmith

With TopGeek 2.0 on the horizon, our 2011 TopGeek finalist, Skaidris Gunsmith, drops in on the iiNet Blog to give us the low-down on some geeky things we can look forward to this year.

If you’re a bit of a geek like I am, 2011 was a huge year with an unprecedented amount of amazing game releases, films, gadgets and of course, the new EB Games expo. Now that 2012 is gearing up, let’s take a look at the latest round of releases that have me fidgeting in my seat with anticipation.

PSP Vita
The latest in portable gaming and the successor to the Sony PSP, the Vita boasts high definition portable gaming, front and back touch interfaces, 3G connectivity and comprehensive augmented reality gaming similar to what we’ve already seen with the Nintendo 3DS.

It’s already been released in Japan with mixed reviews, but if you want to play the new Uncharted that is only playable on the Vita, then you’re just going to have to hold out ‘til it gets to Australia.

Continuing on from the second instalment, Mass Effect 3 promises a conclusion to this epic futuristic space opera. Remember though, each Mass Effect game continues on from any saved files you had on the last, and includes all of the choices you made in the previous games. Let’s hope you haven’t deleted them.

Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) rumours
It went pretty viral for a week or two, but even though both Microsoft and Sony have denied it, there are still some who say the next Xbox and PlayStation consoles will be announced at the E3 expo in June.

Oz Comic Con
Attending Comic-Con has always been a bit of a mission with the event taking pride of place in San Diego, USA. This year though, Australia will play host to its own iteration of the convention when Oz Comic Con comes to Adelaide in May and to Melbourne in June. Check out the Oz Comic Con website for the guest line-up – it’s going to be epic.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected AdventureThe Hobbit
As the prequel to The Lord of The Rings saga, Peter Jackson returns to help complete the story with The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Starring Elijah Wood, Martin Freeman and Evangeline Lilly, The Hobbit sees Bilbo Baggins’ peaceful life interrupted when he joins a group of dwarves to reclaim a treasure taken from them by the dragon, Smaug.

The Avengers
After years dedicated to the set up alone, in 2012 we’ll finally get to see what Joss Whedon has done with his truly unique cast of characters and actors. The Avengers brings together the adventures of The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America to help save the world from Loki and his army. Success or failure, this one’s sure to explode at the box office and in my mind.

The Dark Knight Rises
We all know we’re going to see it. The Dark Knight Rises is the final in what is to be the end of the Christopher Nolan trilogy. This time we get to see Bane and Catwoman in the spotlight as Batman becomes Gotham’s most wanted.

The Amazing Spider-Man press photoAmazing Spider-Man
I think I’m the only person who still holds hope for this reboot. After the tremendous let down that was the Sam Raimis Spider-Man Trilogy, most people have become disillusioned by the Spider-Man brand altogether. But being an old Spidey fan, I’ll always have hope that one day he is represented correctly. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see when The Amazing Spider-Man hits cinemas.

Ghost Rider 2
The first was pretty bad, but if you’re like me, you just can’t say no to Nicholas Cage. So I’ll probably be first in line when Ghost Rider 2 reaches the silver screen this month. The man is as terrible as he is great and the flaming pee gag in the trailer hooked me instantly.

Topgeek 2012
It’s back and geekier than ever, so make sure you follow iiNet on Twitter and keep an eye on this blog for further updates on when it’s all going down. In the meantime, you can land your photo on iiNet’s TopGeek 2.0 mega mural which is set to take pride of place on the outside of their Subiaco headquarters.
