Helping the community through partnerships

FEATURE 2

We like to think we’re a friendly bunch here at iiNet and there’s nothing we love more than to give back to our local communities through our iiCare volunteer program.

Over the last six months our calendar has been jam-packed with loads of different events, programs and opportunities for staff to lend a hand to those in need.

With this year already flying by, we’re keen to share what we’ve been up to and celebrate the generous efforts made by our staff over the past six months.

Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC)

When things get tough we can all agree there’s no place like home, but RMHC provide the next best thing: a safe and comfortable environment for families whose children are undergoing treatment for serious illness or injury. Their Make a Meal program sees corporate or community groups visit their local RMHC House each and every night of the week to prepare a hearty, home-cooked meal for families.

Since January, iiNet staff across Australia, including our Executive team, have so far hosted 10 events at five Houses, preparing over 480 meals. That’s enough bolognese sauce to rival the weight of a gorilla, and enough ice cream scoops to top a double decker bus! One of our teams gave the kids a little extra entertainment by hiring a karaoke machine for the evening! Needless to say, many rounds of “Let it Go” rung into the night.

FEATURE

Australian Red Cross

Giving blood is the perfect way to give a little, and help a lot. Our Club Red team regularly roll up their sleeves to help adults and children who are unwell. So far this year our donors have really ramped up their efforts, already making over 145 donations and saving over 440 lives, which is just shy of our 2014 grand total of 170 donations.

Australian Business Community Network (ABCN)

We’ve also been busy with the friendly team from the Australian Business Community Network (ABCN), mentoring primary and high school students with their personal and professional development. Seventeen staff from Adelaide and Perth have participated in three specialist programs that focus on literacy and language, leadership and career skills.

Volunteering has given staff a fantastic opportunity to support their local communities, and is something we are looking forward to continuing throughout the rest of 2015 and beyond.

We’re proud of the positive impact it has on all involved, as described by Timm, one of our Senior Customer Service Manager’s in Sydney.

“iiNet Sydney really got involved in the Make a Meal events for Ronald McDonald House. We didn’t want to just make a meal, we wanted to make an impact and really socialise with the families. We were able to split up our duties on the night, and ensure everyone had a chance to not only put their heart into making some great meals, but to lend an ear to those families who reside in the House for what varied between days, weeks and years.”

It’s been a fun-filled and successful six months for our iiCare program, and we have even greater plans in the pipeline for the second half of this year so stay tuned to see what our staff get up to.

And from experience make a meal is a god-send. You probably realise already but it just means one less thing RMH parents need to think about..

Having had a granddaughter who a few years ago was found to have childhood leukemia and was admitted to the children’s hospital in Sydney, I know how incredibly valuable the hospitality extended to them at the Ronald McDonald House is to the whole family. It is such an incredibly stressful time for everyone and having this facility close by that enables the parents to spend as much time as possible with the patient and yet to not neglect the other children in the family is marvelous. Thanks to all of you who help them at this critical time in their lives. Dorothy Taylor
