Did you know that Krispy Kreme gives out free doughnuts to people who talk and dress like pirates on September 19th?
“What is so special about September 19th?” I hear you say.
The question you should be asking is “What be tharr importance of Septemberrr 19th?” …see the subtle difference?
International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLAPD) is an original concept created by John Baur (“Ol’ Chumbucket”) and Mark Summers (“Cap’n Slappy”) during a game of racquetball.
As farfetched as it sounds, Baur reacted to a moment of pain by shouting, “Aaarrrr!” and thus the idea was born.
At first a silly in-joke between friends, ITLAPD gained exposure when Baur and Summers sent a letter about their invention to Dave Barry (a columnist) in 2002. Barry loved their concept, and promoted the day on his column, which is now celebrated internationally across 40 countries, with books, T-shirts and other merch available on their website. There’s even a song!
ABC News reports that Talk Like A Pirate Day is also a holiday for Pastafarians, or those who adhere to the beliefs of the satirical Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster. What an awesome day o’ t’ year!
So how do you get involved?
Dress, talk, walk, drink and have fun like a pirate!
In case you don’t know what to say, Facebook has an “English pirate” option under languages which changes your entire news feed into swashbuckling and aye aye cap’ns!
Cap’n Slappy also has some advice: “Drink a lot of rum and let the rest of it come naturally.” Plus, their very own talk like a pirate translator!
Last year there was well over 100 registered work places, parties and clubs participating in ITLAPD, with iiNet included!
Some companies work with organisations such as Childhood Cancer Support and Marie Curie Cancer Care to raise funds and increase awareness of cancer support and research.
