Festive apps for Christmas 2012

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… to download apps that is.

Last year saw a record breaking 1.2 billion apps downloaded during Christmas week alone and 2012 is likely to be a repeat, fuelled by the fact that smartphones and tablets are top of the Christmas  wish list this year.

In years to come app downloading will be a Christmas tradition as revered as dodgy knitwear, cheesy Christmas films and roast turkey dinners. To honour this new tradition, we thought we’d look at some of the best festive apps to get you into the Christmas spirit!

Counting down to Christmas

If your brain isn’t up to a bit of mental arithmetic this festive season you can always download an app to help you countdown the days til Christmas. Yes, really.

There are a number of countdown apps marking out the number of sleeps until Christmas, but the excitable sounding ‘Christmas!!’ for iPhone is the best of the bunch, complete with an advent calendar, yuletide wallpapers, Christmas tunes and some wintery jokes for good measure.

We wish you an organised Christmas

If Christmas shopping fills you with dread, the nifty Christmas Gift List Planner Android app is a lifesaver. This helps organise your Christmas shopping list into groups, keep track of your budget and ensure you’re meeting Christmas deadlines to get your gifts bought, wrapped and posted!

Christmas tunes

There’s a wide variety of Christmas music apps out there, whatever your taste but what could possibly get you in the mood for the festive season than Michael Bublé Christmas app? You’ll be reaching for the eggnog in no time – whether it’s out of festive cheer or despair.

Christmas sing-along

There’s no excuse for not knowing the words. Get a good old fashioned Christmas Carol session going with ‘Christmas Carol Music and Lyrics’ for iPhone. Next year, you can record your own Christmas album to rival Michael Bublé’s.

Hotline to the man in red

The ‘Ring Santa’ iPhone app is lets you leave a message for Santa with your Christmas wish list. You know, in case he didn’t get all those emails, letters and hints you’ve been leaving since the middle of July.

Grinchtastic Christmas cards

The ‘Dr Seuss Camera The Grinch Edition’ is a paid for app for iPhone, but at $1.99 it’s quite a steal. The app enables you to take pictures with Grinch characters and original Grinch artwork, which can then be customised with different messages and sent to friends and family as a yuletide e-card.

Penguins might fly…

‘Flying Penguin’ regularly tops the game app charts because it is as addictive as eggnog. A wintery favourite that you’ll still be playing next Christmas.

Let it snow

There are lots of snowglobe apps out there, but ‘3D Ultimate Snowglobe!’ for iPhone also has Let It Snow playing as a soundtrack. Guaranteed to get stuck in your head all day.

Searching for Santa

Android app ‘Santa Tracker Christmas’ beats the other Santa stalking apps because it updates with sightings of Santa and allows you to send a letter to Santa with any last minute requests. You can also use the app to keep track of Santa’s blog, just in case he’s dropping any hints about who has made the nice list this year.

How exactly do you cook a turkey?

An essential app for the big day, the ‘BBC Good Food Festive Recipes’ app will help even novice chefs knock up fine festive cuisine. It comes with easy to follow videos and is handy for planning a perfect Christmas feast for just $2.99 in iTunes.

Appy Christmas!

Make sure you enjoy these Christmas apps because January is just around the corner. It might be time to download some free budgeting and dieting apps after all that festive fun….
