Everything you need to know about 5G, brought to you by Westnet

The future is connected.

From self-driving cars and artificial intelligence, to a fridge that can place an online grocery order for you, a slew of awe-inspiring technologies designed to make our lives easier, safer, and healthier are just on the horizon.

It’s an exciting time; and one that will require a high-speed, always-on internet connection. And with that, we introduce 5G.

So, what is 5G – and how is it different to 3G and 4G?

5G is the fifth generation of wireless cellular network technology. The first two generations (1G and 2G) brought us phone calls and text messaging, 3G introduced mobile internet, 4G video streaming, and 5G brings us into the next era of connectivity for both mobile and home internet.

This isn’t just quicker downloads and clearer video calls (though, they are a great perks). It’s about building a network that will be able to support telemedicine for rural areas, driverless vehicles, smart stadiums, advanced gaming, and other innovations in the Internet of Things (IoT) – a term used by the tech world to explain an upcoming era of digitally-connected everyday objects like lightbulbs, toasters, and even dog collars.

What are the benefits of 5G?

  • Faster network speeds. Up to 100 times faster than 4G.
  • Lower latency. Time delays will be shorter and more real-time.
  • Enhanced capacity. 5G networks will be able to support more devices at once. This is important as it means it will be able to not only handle a higher number of smartphones, but also all the new developments set to come in the Internet of Things.
  • Potentially cheaper home internet. At the moment, internet providers who sell NBN have to pay a fee to the national network. If providers are using their own towers for their 5G network, they will have more control over prices – which could mean savings for you.

Is 5G safe?

Yes – 5G networks have been vigorously tested and announced to be safe. Just like previous mobile networks and other technologies that use mobile frequencies – including TVs, WiFi, radios, and microwaves – 5G is covered by international and national exposure guidelines and regulations. On top of this, we continually monitor and evaluate to make sure all regulations are met, now and long into the future.

What 5G services does Westnet currently offer?
