iiNet opens its doors for Open Day 2011

by Nikkita Dixon

On Monday, 24 October 2011, we swung open the doors of our head office for iiNet’s Open Day. The annual event saw hundreds of customers and fans breeze through the doors of ii to take a peek at the way we operate, ask our executives questions and learn about a range of ‘net related topics.

The day began with plenty of laughs and excitement as our mascots, iian and iirene, greeted our guests and dished out free hugs. As Open Day debutantes, our quirky characters went down well with the enthusiastic crowds. Once inside, our guests were soon on their way to their respective tours, seminars or workshops with an iiNet goodie bag in hand.

After ambling down the road to Ace Cinemas, visitors were able to pull up a comfy chair for our first seminar of the day – Staying safe and sound online. Our online safety guru, Rebecca Moonen, took to the stands to go through the ins and outs of passwords, security, safe social networking, cyber bullying, online shopping and more. If you missed this particular seminar, feel free to catch up on her safety tips by visiting iiNet’s Online Safety website.

Shortly after, our Business team gave punters an insight into their new product suite and handed out advice on running a small to medium sized business in the Getting down to Business seminar. Executive panel: what’s next for the World Wide Web saw iiNet’s executives field questions from attendees on everything from the NBN through to our latest support service – the BoBsquadTM.

The future of iiNet and the Internet in general has been a hot topic of late. Therefore, it was unsurprising the Understanding the NBN seminar was one of the most anticipated for the day. Our NBN Product Manager, Gary Chapel, offered some great information on the new fibre network and what could be expected in the coming months and years.

Next, the iiNet Labs team discussed their recent product releases and the different ways to utilise a home connection in Broaden your broadband. Having launched several products this year, including BoB2TM, BoBLiteTM and the iiNet Wireless Bridge, our research and development team explored the potential of these products and how they fit in with other iiNet products and services.

To finish up for the day, anyone who caught the late session, Working @ iiNet, learnt all about the joys of being an iiNet staff member from a panel of staff from across the business.

Throughout the day, we held rotating workshops in our training rooms teaching punters how to be savvier online. Back by popular demand, the workshops included Help, my Internet is broken as well as Social Media 101 and Connecting your doovalackies to your thingamajigs hosted by the iiNet BoBsquadTM.

We also ran tours of our HQ to show how each department contributes to the smooth running of the company. Anyone waiting around between seminars had the chance to sit back and relax in our staff break out room and enjoy some complimentary fruit and snacks or a game of pool.

It was a great day for staff and visitors alike. If you missed out this year, get a piece of the action by heading to the Open Day webpage. In the coming weeks we’ll be posting our presentation material and video footage from the day’s seminars and workshops. See you next year!

I live in Melbourne. I expect to visit Perth in October next year. Do you have a date for the 2012 open day?

Thanks for the open day. I found the seminars immensely useful and will be using some of the tips gleaned in the very near future. Keep up the good work. – and keep up the great service. Roll on NBN.
