TopGeek 2.0 kicks off!

Defining a geek these days is about as easy as defining the current well-being of Schrodinger’s cat. The 70s ‘Urkle’ cliché couldn’t be further from reality; these days our geeks are the ones with the cool jobs, the fashionable wardrobe and the huge following – and they’re not even trying. We like to think of our geeks as those with a bit of an obsession for what they do; whether that’s collecting Buffy the Vampire Slayer figurines, playing the double bass, blogging about technology or playing World of Warcraft.

That said, we’re calling on geeky types throughout the country to discover their inner geek and put these passions on show as we begin the hunt for Australia’s next TopGeek.

If you consider yourself to be a bit geeky, nominate yourself (or a friend!) to become iiNet’s TopGeek 2.0 by entering a 90-second video explaining what kind of geek you are and why you think you could take out the crown.

The winner will land themselves an all-expenses paid trip to one of four geeky conventions in the US along with the opportunity to be iiNet’s TopGeek ambassador. We’ll also be treating our ‘Top 5’ runners up to a trip to one of five Australian geeky conventions. In fact, even our ‘Top 25’ will be up for some awesome geeky prizes, so get your nominations in!

This will be the second time iiNet has begun the nation-wide search for geeky talent. In 2011, hundreds of geeks from across the country battled it out for the number one spot. Bloggers, gamers, LARPers, film makers and plenty of geeks in between put their talents to the test in a series of challenges. When the competition came to a sizzling climax, Tasmanian comic artist, Cassandra James, was left standing as Australia’s TopGeek champion.

But the competition wasn’t the be all and end all of the TopGeek journey. Many of our finalists became TopGeek ambassadors for iiNet by attending all sorts of geeky events on our behalf and becoming our official bloggers in the field. You might even spot some of our past TopGeeks helping out this year as we search for TopGeek 2.0 – after all, they are the cream of the crop of Australian geeky talent.

Even if you consider yourself a bit geeky, but aren’t necessarily up for competing for the TopGeek title, we still want to hear from you. Send us a photo of your best geek moment to land a spot on our TopGeek 2.0 mega mural which will take pride of place outside iiNet’s Subiaco HQ.

Get your geek on, Australia!
