Using tech to try new things in 2018

2018 has arrived and for many that means a new year, a fresh start, and many new experiences. If you’ve set some goals for yourself to try new things in the coming year, there are some incredible experiences you may like to try.

We’ve taken a look at a range of apps, websites, and innovative ideas that are ready for you to try out!

Say it how it is

Experts predict that by 2020, there will be 50 billion connected devices in the world! The Internet of Things (IoT) is the growing network of physical objects that can connect to the internet. Tracking your fitness with Fitbit, switching off the lights in the kitchen from your phone, or checking the weather using Alexa… these are all examples of interactions with the IoT.

IFTTT is a free web-based service that allows you to create simple conditional statements called Applets. These applets are basically automatic instructions for your devices to follow so you can better automate your life.

For example, you can command your device to sync new events added from an iOS Calendar to your GCal, post to Facebook and Twitter with your voice, or tell Alexa to email you your shopping list.

Go bilingual

Have you ever wanted to learn another language? Thanks to modern tech and the internet, now you can learn it on-the-go and online!

You can enrol in language classes online or download apps such as Duolingo, Memrise, and Babbel. These apps allow you to learn from language experts with interactive dialogues and videos voiced by native speakers. If you’re low on free time, you can even do 15-minute sessions to fit them into your schedule.

Learn about the world around you

The internet helps you find videos on almost anything your heart desires. Documentary Heaven is a website jam-packed with hundreds of documentaries for you to indulge in – for free!

You can browse the entire list or if you don’t know where to start, head to the Top 100 list and check out Louis Theroux, Stephen Fry, and Apollo Zero.

For those avid doco lovers, you can get a range of documentaries in the Fetch Knowledge Pack with our add on Channel Packs as well!

Discover new food

If you tend to go for the same dishes every time you eat out, challenge yourself to try new cuisines and new restaurants to mix it up a little in 2018. With apps such as ZomatoUber Eats, and Menulog, you can discover great places around you by searching through restaurants and cuisines to test your taste buds on. If a movie night is in order, you can even have them delivered to your door!
